HUGHES FIRED FROM CABINET

HUGHES FIRED FROM CABINET

At long last, Prime Minister Borden has done the honourable thing! He has thrown Sir Sam Hughes, his incompetent minister of Militia, out of the Cabinet. Now, Hughes will be unable to do any more damage to Canadian unity. Hughes, more than any other person, has divided and torn this country apart with his policies.

Hughes has managed to antagonize everyone in Quebec. Those French Canadians who have volunteered for the English war have been insulted. The recruitment posters, training and instruction manuals are in English only. More importantly, promotions have only been given to the English-speaking officers. How can Hughes and other Canadians expect French Canadians to join in the war effort when they are treated so poorly?

As Minister of Militia, Hughes has disgraced the nation by rewarding his friends and cronies with munitions contracts. These shady deals have allowed his friends to make millions at the taxpayer's expense. Why should we spill one more drop of precious French-Canadian blood in Europe. Canada only wants Quebec in Confederation when we are willing to sacrifice for the British Empire. Britain started this war. Let Britain finish it!

The author of the article, in my opinion, does not describe the fucts regarding Sir Hughes objectively. He presents his opinion because he wants to affect the public. Although negative and using extremely strong terms, the article is not very far from reality .

Key words:

In my opinion, the writer of this text does not support sir Sam Hughes for many reasons. First of all, he starts the text with the phrase : Prime Minister Borden has done the honourable thing! He has thrown Sir Sam Hughes, his incompetent minister of Militia, out of the Cabinet. This means that the writer thinks that firing sir Sam was a good idea, because mr Hughes has divided and torn the country apart with his policy, he is incopetent, he treats French Canadians poorly, has disgraced the nation and he has given promotion only to the English-speaking officers.By numbering the faults Sam Hughes has done, it is clear that the writer is against him.
Although Hughes had proved a competent, and sometimes exceptional, front-line officer, boastfulness and impatience told strongly against him. ( Wikipedia ) As we can see  the writer of Montreal Matin and wikipedia have different opinion for this theme.
Also this is written in his memorial plaque at  Lindsay, Ontario:
Soldier, journalist, imperialist and Member of Parliament for Lindsay, Ontario from 1892 to 1921, Sam Hughes helped to create a distinctively Canadian Army. As Minister of Militia and Defence (1911-1916) he raised the Canadian Expeditionary Force which fought in World War I, and was knighted for his services. Disagreements with his colleagues and subordinates forced his retirement from the Cabinet in 1916."
So, after all, i believe that Sir Sam Hughes has done much for Canada and that's why there is a memorial plaque at Ontario.

Trip to Slovenia: Thursday

On Thursday morning, we woke up at 7:00 pm and we had breakfast. Right after, we went up on the hill just like all the other mornings, and we then took the bus which lead us to Postonja Cave, the biggest cave of the Balkans ( about 25 km deep ). It was a bit far, but we enjoyed all the way there. When we reached the place, we bought tickets for the mini cave and the big one!! When we took a small tour through the mini cave, which was pretty cool, we were ready for the Postonja, but we had to wit for about 20 minutes. Finally, we entered the cave and took a tour guide which was very interesting. We learned about the history of the cave, the lenght of it, some creatures who lived inside it and many others... Unfortunately, we had to return to Pacug, but firstly we visited a huge park! We saw horses, and had some time to spend on seeing some other animals and doing what we wanted to. After30 minutes we went on the bus and returned to Pacug, where after the lunch, it was the second country presentation day!! It was our turn to presentate our country. We told some thing about Greece and then i played a song with my guitar and Anastasis danced!!! It was great fun! Then, all the countries danced a greek tradiotional dance and we gave them some greek foods. Other countries were presentating, like Slovakia and German. I  liked their presentations very much Everything was great! We then had some spare time, so we invited some children from other countries to play cards and we kept awake untill 1:30 pm. Unfortunately, we had to sleep because we wouldn't be able to wake up the day after. Thurstday was just perfect! I loved that day!
